Chapter Forty-Eight

Sarah ran. The wolf was getting away and she didn’t have time to wait on Shaun. The initial attack had ruined her jacket and lost the beast an ear. Sword in hand she gave chase when it sensed its impending death and took off. Less than an hour in town and they were already tracking down something deadly without any authorisation. It was allowed, but the paperwork was hell.

The clearing was unexpected, but it was where the wolf was headed. She saw the tent and pushed forward with renewed effort. The burst of adrenaline the worry brought forth spurred her onwards. The wolf leapt into the air, towards a muscular guy with long dreadlocks who’d completely frozen to the spot in shock. She caught the beast in mid-air, the sword taking its head clean off. It dropped out of the air and crushed the tent. She gasped in a breath, locking eyes with the wolf’s intended victim.

“Hey, what the fuck?” The wide-eyed scrawny guy she’d barely noticed when she’d run by was kicking at the very dead wolf.

“Who are you?” The intended victim didn’t seem shaken, by the wolf at least. He kept his gorgeous green eyes on her, making her think things she probably shouldn’t.

She smiled. “Sarah Gallows,” she introduced, sheathing her sword. He took her hand in both of his when she offered it. She glanced down, taking in the thick black lines of a tribal style tattoo around his right wrist.

“Ray Prentice,” he told her. “I think you just saved my life.”

The other guy shoved Ray out of the road and planted a kiss on her outstretched hand. He grinned at her and she noticed how striking his bright blue eyes were against his pale skin. He ran a hand through his dark, floppy hair as she raised an eyebrow at him.

“And you would be?” she asked.

“Dev. You’re awesome.”

She laughed. Green-eyes folded his arms, tensing up. She yanked her hand back before Over-eager could kiss his way up her arm.

“What’s… happened?” Shaun burst out of the woods, eyeing the dead wolf and then looking at his sister with biting disapproval. “Effing A.”

She knew what he was thinking. With a helpless shrug, she turned to him.

“The wolf went after them. They can help clean this up,” she said, trying to make the mess better. He sighed, staring suspiciously at the guys. Shaun wasn’t exactly a people person.

“That’s not an ordinary wolf,” Dev said, “so don’t try to pretend it was. We’re not idiots.”

“Christ,” Shaun muttered, folding his arms. He raised his eyebrows at her. She knew he was waiting on her usual crazy idea to veto and paint over with his own dull-as-dishwater one.

“I say toss the body over the cliff with the tent and be done with it,” she said, challenging him to disagree. He simply looked at the guys.

“And then?”

“And then you can piss off so I can have a three-way with these two guys I just met five minutes ago,” she snapped.

“Don’t be rank. You know what I meant.
